R.I.P. Bozo the Clown

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Larry Harmon, who turned the character Bozo the Clown into a show business staple that delighted children for more than a half-century, died Thursday of congestive heart failure. He was 83.

Although not the original Bozo, Larry Harmon portrayed the popular frizzy-haired clown in countless appearances.

His publicist, Jerry Digney, told The Associated Press he died at his home.

Although not the original Bozo, Harmon portrayed the popular clown in countless appearances and, as an entrepreneur, he licensed the character to others, particularly dozens of television stations around the country. The stations in turn hired actors to be their local Bozos.

"You might say, in a way, I was cloning BTC (Bozo the Clown) before anybody else out there got around to cloning DNA," Harmon told the AP in a 1996 interview.

"Bozo is a combination of the wonderful wisdom of the adult and the childlike ways in all of us," Harmon said.

Pinto Colvig, who also provided the voice for Walt Disney's Goofy, originated Bozo the Clown when Capitol Records introduced a series of children's records in 1946. Harmon would later meet his alter ego while answering a casting call to make personal appearances as a clown to promote the records.

He got that job and eventually bought the rights to Bozo. Along the way, he embellished Bozo's distinctive look: the orange-tufted hair, the bulbous nose, the outlandish red, white and blue costume.

"I felt if I could plant my size 83AAA shoes on this planet, (people) would never be able to forget those footprints," he said.

Susan Harmon, his wife of 29 years, indicated Harmon was the perfect fit for Bozo.

"He was the most optimistic man I ever met. He always saw a bright side; he always had something good to say about everybody. He was the love of my life," she said Thursday.

The business -- combining animation, licensing of the character, and personal appearances -- made millions, as Harmon trained more than 200 Bozos over the years to represent him in local markets.

"I'm looking for that sparkle in the eyes, that emotion, feeling, directness, warmth. That is so important," he said of his criteria for becoming a Bozo.

The Chicago version of Bozo ran on WGN-TV in Chicago for 40 years and was seen in many other cities after cable television transformed WGN into a superstation.

Bozo -- portrayed in Chicago for many years by Bob Bell -- was so popular that the waiting list for tickets to a TV show eventually stretched to a decade, prompting the station to stop taking reservations for 10 years. On the day in 1990 when WGN started taking reservations again, it took just five hours to book the show for five more years. The phone company reported more than 27 million phone call attempts had been made.

By the time the show bowed out in Chicago, in 2001, it was the last locally produced version. Harmon said at the time that he hoped to develop a new cable or network show, as well as a Bozo feature film.

He became caught up in a minor controversy in 2004 when the International Clown Hall of Fame in Milwaukee took down a plaque honoring him as Bozo and formally endorsed Colvig for creating the role. Harmon denied ever misrepresenting Bozo's history.

He said he was claiming credit only for what he added to the character -- "What I sound like, what I look like, what I walk like" -- and what he did to popularize Bozo.

"Isn't it a shame the credit that was given to me for the work I have done, they arbitrarily take it down, like I didn't do anything for the last 52 years," he told the AP at the time.

Harmon protected Bozo's reputation with a vengeance, while embracing those who poked good-natured fun at the clown.

As Bozo's influence spread through popular culture, his very name became a synonym for clownish behavior.

"It takes a lot of effort and energy to keep a character that old fresh so kids today still know about him and want to buy the products," Karen Raugust, executive editor of The Licensing Letter, a New York-based trade publication, said in 1996.

A normal character runs its course in three to five years, Raugust said. "Harmon's is a classic character. It's been around 50 years."

On New Year's Day 1996, Harmon dressed up as Bozo for the first time in 10 years, appearing in the Rose Parade in Pasadena.

The crowd reaction, he recalled, "was deafening."

"They kept yelling, `Bozo, Bozo, love you, love you.' I shed more crocodile tears for five miles in four hours than I realized I had," he said. "I still get goose bumps."

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Harmon became interested in theater while studying at the University of Southern California.

"Bozo is a star, an entertainer, bigger than life," Harmon once said. "People see him as Mr. Bozo, somebody you can relate to, touch and laugh with."

Besides his wife, Harmon is survived by his son, Jeff Harmon, and daughters Lori Harmon, Marci Breth-Carabet and Leslie Breth

The Move

Expectations are a natural occurrence.  One cannot help but have a thought, therefore possessing a preconceived notion how a particular situation will turn out.  It's human nature at its finest.  As much as you can respect that, you must also evolve into the realization that things may not pan out like you had once hoped.  Along with hope, there's also intuition.  And as a side plate, there lies fear and reality.  Fear, at times, will eat away at the strength that our intuition holds.  Then there's that reality factor... what it truly is, what we believe it to be and at times, what we fail to see.

I did it.  I moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas... just like I had planned.  And as well as the wind blows, things didn't happen how I had once thought they would and above all, I moved here for different reasons.

Johny and I agreed to be friends, we both had our own valid reasons.  We decided upon this right before he and his band mates stayed a few days on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to play some shows mid-June.  And that visit... oh, boy.  Did that turn out to be a disaster.  The venue turnouts were low, I wrecked my car, behaved like a spoiled brat and drank entirely too much.  To sum it up, I wasn't that good of a friend to Johny.

Even among all the disaster, we all still had fun.  We all stayed at the trumpet player's mom's house, on 2nd Street in Gulfport... one block from the beach.  Several nights we pranced to the shore for a midnight swim.  Okay... more like a three o'clock swim.  One particular night, it was intermittently raining but we decided to go anyway.  Not even a corner block we made and it began to pour.  Cold rain, at that.  What gave me strength to make the rest of the trek, was knowing that gulf water was quite warm.  As soon as I hit that sand, I ran as fast as I could to that water... and how warm it was!  Out into the gulf, we all watched the lightening in awe.  It had been years since I've had that much fun in those Mississippi waters... good stuff.

With my car in need of professional TLC, my move was held back for two weeks.  Actually, it all worked out for the best.  I had more time to go through my things, throw out what I didn't need, and store what I don't need right now.  I spent more precious time with my niece Daisy, and I'm glad I did.  It tears me up to be away from her... yet something that I need to go through just the same.

I drove all day Sunday, arriving here just eleven hours after pulling out of Mobile at early dawn.  Got a bite to eat at Common Grounds on Dickson and checked my email while I was there.  Soon after, I went to my friends Jenn and Jeff's place in Goshen where they were all having a wonderful lazy Sunday get-together.  As the sun (finally!) went down a little after 9, the lightening bugs began dancing and prancing all around during their nightly gig and just when their show was beginning to take off, the stars in the skies above never shone any brighter for me to see.  All I could be was mesmerized... and just a little buzzed from the Chilean wine.

For a few nights, I stayed on Johny's couch.  Monday afternoon Johny brought me to a friend's apartment complex right off Dickson St. where there are a few apartments for rent.  For the record, Dickson St. is THE happening street here in Fayetteville.  Ah... just what I was looking for!  Upstairs studio, with hardwood floors, an awesome view and complete downtown charm.  OH! and priced just right for me!  It took two days, but I got it.  I got the quaint but personable, artsy little crib less than a block from Dickson St.  Sweet!

So far, I haven't done quite a bit... trying to calmly blend in, perhaps.  I have met a few cool cats in my area (I already got a bud hook-up, too!), have been invited out a few nights but I must admit, I've been somewhat exhausted the last couple of days.  For one, hauling all my things up, up, up those steps can be very tiring.  Also, I haven't an A/C in my place yet.  The plan is to get a window unit in a few weeks.  For the time being, I am thinking about getting a floor unit from Wal-Mart.  There isn't the humidity like there is down on the Coast, but it's hot just the same without A/C.  Not as hot as it gets back home, thankfully.

As far as the job situation, I'm still in the planning stages of my hunt.  It occurred to me that searching for a job with the upcoming July Fourth holiday, the effort would be pointless.  At least, I'm going with that excuse.  Besides, I want to enjoy our nation's independence.... just like I'm enjoying mine.

Fixed what?

I just sent an e-mail to six people where I referenced Fixed Assets... with no "t". One of the people is my boss. Another is the Fixed Assets Manager. Outlook needs a profanity filter not a spell check.

GSE.

Heavy rain woke me up at 3:00am. At 3:05, it felt like lightning hit right outside my window. I jumped out of bed to see if I had been hit. Ten minutes later it lulled me back to sleep. I miss thunderstorms.

Last night I watched Green Street Hooligans. It gets three stars just for having Claire Forlani in it. It loses half-a-star because she had such a small role. It's about a guy who has everything, but has to lose it all and get into a lot of fights to learn about life. Oh. Oh, right. GSH tries to glamorize soccer hooligans. It doesn't work.

I also made a new South Beach dish last night, pizza meat pie. I'm set for food into the weekend.

I believe tonight will be Lars and the Real Girl. I'm starting to like Ryan Gosling, and this movie looks hilarious. He's so bad with women he gets a Real Doll and thinks it's real. The whole town goes along with his psychosis until he can work things out. This could be me in a year or two.

Wut?

It's a shame devils_mouth deleted her LJ. She always understood my accounting posts.

An accountant with the Oregon Dept of Education was just found guilty of embezzlement. This is fairly common, but his testimony cracks me up.

Crosson said he took the money after other supervisors and managers signed off that the federal funds had been spent, leaving him with no way to reconcile account balances or explain why money was still there. He said his former boss told him, "and I quote, 'You're the accountant. Do something with it.' " So he put the money into his own account "while someone could determine what to do."

Basically, "We had this money I couldn't account for, so I put it in my personal account via a fake company until we could figure out what to do with the money. Oh, and then I spent the money I was holding on a house and car."

There's no job market for accountants with embezzlement charges.

Roommate Columbia

I was wondering if anyone knows any people who are looking for roommates in Columbia, SC?

I know this isn't Charleston related but I figure I'd give it a shot.

Lost and more weight stuff.

Apparently Matthew Fox has relatives in Bend, which may include his Mom. A co-worker just told me a rumor that he may be in Portland for the holiday weekend. For any locals, your job this weekend is to find him and coerce the ending of Lost out of him. Alcohol and threats of violence are both acceptable methods.

I finally set up a new account on FitDay. As an accountant, I have an appreciation for numbers. Quantifying and comparing data makes sense. I've felt gross for several months but didn't have a good perspective on how gross until this morning. My Body Mass Index is 30.9, which puts me at borderline obese (30 to 39 is obese on the BMI scale). Ouch. Of course, a big part of wanting to lose weight is vanity and confidence, but there's also some health concerns. There's a history of high blood pressure and bad tickers in my family.

even more weight and diet stuff over here. )

Downtown Apartments

I've been looking at apartments downtown online and two properties keep popping up. Sergeant Jasper at 310 Broad St. and the Courtyards at 411 Meeting St. The info and pictures online seems pretty appealing but as we all know pictures and online tour isn't as what they are in real life. Does anyone know more info about these properties? What kind of neighborhoods are they located in? And if anyone know of other recommendations for a downtown apartment feel free to point me in the right direction. I can use all the help I can get.

4th.

Yessss! There are a few people who need to work on the 4th, so I'll be here to authorize journal entries and provide general assistance. The office will be nice and quiet so I can get some of my work done without interruption. I'll probably take my holiday on July 11 or 14 once we're done with Q2 close. Maybe I can make the Shaniko trip then.

Still buzzing from the weekend. That was much needed.

oh HELL no. Whose bright fucking Idea was it to put up jurrasic motherfucking park movies over my sunday fox cartoons?! Have they fucking lost their goddamn minds?!

I read all the jurrasic park books. Save yourself from both the movie and the books. It's all bullshit and in no way interesting. Especially when it's over the simpsons, family guy and american dad.

I did however rented Automaton Transfusion http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0469683/
Apparently it's a really really shitty zombie movie. the sprinter kind of zombies(which just totally go against all kinds of muscle deteriorational fact). Like a super shitty movie gore fest!!! zomg i cant wait. I should put it in already.

Anyway, I had set myself up on a blind date with a mutual friend's friend. She started out a bit late, so instead of meeting for Get Smart(which was alright, btw) we went and got a few drinks and talked. After having 4 margaritas in 2 hours and her 2 beers, we went to the movie. then we went and got cheese fries, and more drinks. I switched to beer. After our 7 hour date we said our goodbyes and went our ways. She was fun, not dumb at all and fairly quick witted. Adjectives will be the death of me. I felt like I was on the fucking ball. When did i learn to be so social and witty and just fucking awesome?! I goddamn rule.

Anyway. I need to finish up the beer and watch this shitty zombie movie. OMG i hope it sucks :D

WALL-E

WALL-E was incredible. When I first saw the trailers I knew I had to see it, but I figured I'd netfix it (yay for verbing nouns). [info]lokitwospirit talked on the hike about how great it was so I braved the throngs of kids to catch it at a matinee. The kids at the theater were surprisingly cute and well-behaved. The parents, not so much.

Oh yeah, the movie. Great story. Great character development, especially considering the minimal dialogue. Great background message about the effects of consumerism on the planet. And hilarious! Kids movies have gotten so damn funny. I was cracking up at all the trailers.

To totally switch gears, I want to see Mongol, which was nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign language film. So far it's only playing at the Cinema 21 on NW 21st. I'm hoping it'll come to the Regal on SW Park soon.

Edit: WALL-E spoilers in the comments.

The dogs is barkin'.

Either the hike was tougher than I thought it would be, or I'm in worse shape than I thought. It's probably both.

[info]solteronita, [info]lokitwospirit, and I headed out for the Cape Horn hike (8 miles, 1400' elevation change) early this morning. We knocked it out before the heat kicked in (it's 99 now), but I still wound up with a farmer's tan.

At one point, I pulled a Bear Grylls and pointed out some cougar tracks. Turns out they were dog tracks. In my defense, they must have been really big dogs.
